Privacy policy
This website
No ads and no third-party trackers or analytics; we set no cookies. The only identifier that may be stored on your device is the “Have your say” token — and only if you answer a question (details). Apart from that we keep only the date of your last visit on your device (not an identifier — details). Fonts and images are served from our own server.
Visit counter (aggregate, cookieless)
What we count: how many times each page is opened per day, and how many times a few things are tapped (such as “share”, “copy”, “subscribe”, opening a collapsed section, a video or a story chapter, and reaching the end of the story) — as aggregate numbers only. With each number we keep only a broad source (e.g. X, Facebook, WhatsApp, Google or “direct”) and whether the screen is a phone or a computer.
What we don't keep: your IP address, browser, operating system, device model, any identifier, or the time of day (only the date). To prevent flooding, the server uses the IP address temporarily in memory only; those counters are cleared about every 60 seconds and never written anywhere.
How long: aggregate counts are kept for 400 days, then deleted automatically. If your browser sends “Do Not Track” or “Global Privacy Control”, the counter sends nothing at all.
“Are you like Egypt?”, the weekly guess and the visit streak (on your device only)
When you pick your glass in “Are you like Egypt?”, save a guess for next week’s number, or open the site on consecutive days, your browser keeps that on your device only (localStorage: today’s glass, your guess, and the dates you visited in the last 60 days). None of it is sent to us and none of it is tied to an identity. The comparison card is drawn inside your browser. Clear it any time from your browser settings (clear site data).
Date of your last visit (on your device only)
What we store: one thing only: the date you last opened the site (e.g. 2026-11-02) — no time of day, no number, no identifier, no cookie. It is kept on your own device (in localStorage) under the name mm_last and is never sent to us.
Why: to know, in aggregate, whether visitors come back. When you open the site on a new day, your browser compares that date with today and sends the counter one broad category only, once a day: “first visit”, “back after 1 day”, “after 2–7 days”, “after 8–30 days” or “after more than a month”, and then updates the date. We only see daily totals per category — we cannot tell who came back or link one visit to another.
How to clear it: clear this site's data in your browser settings (Site data for mazagmasr.com), or use private browsing. If your browser sends “Do Not Track” or “Global Privacy Control”, we don't store this date and send nothing.
Like most sites, traffic passes through Cloudflare's network for security and speed; it necessarily handles basic connection data (such as your IP address) to deliver the page.
When you subscribe
What we store: your email (required), your name if you give it, the topics you pick, your email language, the time you consented and the consent wording you agreed to, and your subscription status (pending · confirmed · unsubscribed). To protect the form from abuse we keep a one-way keyed hash of your IP address (never the address itself, and it can't be reversed) and only a general browser/OS family (e.g. Chrome/Android).
Why: to send you the Mazag Masr you asked for (the Mazag Index and the week's story) and service emails (confirmation and welcome), to tailor topics, and to stop fake sign-ups. Legal basis: your explicit consent, in line with Egypt's Personal Data Protection Law No. 151 of 2020.
Double opt-in: we send nothing except the confirmation email until you tap “Confirm my subscription”. Unconfirmed requests are deleted automatically after 30 days.
Who sees it: only the Mazag Masr team. Emails are delivered through an email-sending provider that processes your address on our behalf and only for that purpose. Bot protection on the form uses Cloudflare Turnstile, which runs on the form only. We never sell, rent or share your data for any other purpose, and there are no ads.
How long: for as long as you're subscribed. If you unsubscribe, sending stops immediately and your data is deleted within 30 days (we may keep a hashed copy of your email only to honour the unsubscribe).
How to unsubscribe: every email from us has a one-click “Unsubscribe” link. You can also ask to see, correct or delete your data at any time by writing to [email protected].
When you answer a question or explain your answer
What we store: the option you chose, the question version, and the time of the answer and of your last change. On your first answer the server gives your browser a random token kept only on your device (in localStorage, not a cookie); its only job is to let you change or delete your answer or withdraw your text. We keep only a one-way keyed hash of that token, never the token itself. We do not store your name, email, phone or IP address with answers, and the token is never used by the counter or for any tracking.
Duplicates and abuse: Cloudflare Turnstile runs once, on your first answer; temporary rate limits use a daily-rotating hash of your IP address (never the address), deleted after 48 hours and never linked to answers. Bursts from one network are kept “under review” and not counted until reviewed.
Results: we show the number of accepted answers (the denominator), the period and the last update. Breakdowns and percentages appear only from 30 answers. These are answers from Mazag Masr visitors who chose to answer — not an opinion poll and not representative of Egyptians.
Your text (optional): emails, phone numbers, links and handles are removed automatically. It is never published unless you tick “I agree that Mazag Masr may publish this” and the team reviews it; we may shorten it without changing its meaning. You can withdraw it at any time (“Remove my text”). Answering, consenting to publication and subscribing by email are three separate actions.
How long: 180 days after a question closes the hash is removed from answers (the answer stays only as a count). Text without publication consent, or rejected, is deleted 90 days after the question closes. Backups are rotated after 7 days.
Where: on our own server, accessible only to the Mazag Masr team. Legal basis: your explicit consent for publication and the operation of the service you requested for the token, in line with Egypt's Personal Data Protection Law No. 151 of 2020.
Your rights: as we don't know who you are, access and deletion work from the same browser (through the token on your device). Questions: [email protected].
